Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old active duty member of the US Air Force, revolted against the US-backed slaughter being carried out by the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, February 25, by setting himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in the US capital of Washington, DC.

In the besieged coastal enclave during the last 143 days, Israel has murdered close to 30,000 Palestinians. Bushnell says he will “no longer be complicit in genocide” and that he is “about to engage in an extreme act of protest – but compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers is not extreme at all” in video footage shot both before and during his self-immolation.

To be true, since 1948, when the state of Israel decided to lethally establish itself on Palestinian territory, Palestinians have grown accustomed to, well, burning to death at the hands of Israeli firepower. Undoubtedly, the use of skin-incinerating white phosphorous ammunition by the Israeli force in recent times has had a role in the entire Palestinian “experience.”

Bushnell, dressed in full military fatigues, stands in front of the Israeli embassy gate and douses himself with flammable liquid after making the crucial observation that US collaboration in the slaughter of Palestinians is “what our ruling class has decided will be normal.” He yells “Free Palestine” again and over as he quickly burns to death, while security guards tell him to get “on the ground.” One really helpful person aims a rifle at the fire.

Following Bushnell’s act of self-destruction, the New York Times published an article titled “Man Dies After Setting Himself on Fire Outside Israeli Embassy in Washington, Police Say.” This headline is arguably one of the most decontextualized and diluted in history. If the US newspaper of record had carried headlines such as “Octogenarian Detroit Woman Dies After Setting Herself on Fire, Police Say- An Event Possibly Having Nothing To Do With Said Woman’s Opposition To The Vietnam War Or Anything Like That” in 1965, one wonders what people would have thought.

Regarding self-immolations related to the Vietnam War, consider the following quote from prominent US historian and journalist David Halberstam about the 1963 death of Vietnamese monk Thich Quang Duc in Saigon, South Vietnam: “Flames were coming from a human being; his body was slowly withering and shriveling up, his head blackening and charring.”

The stench of burning flesh permeated the air; people burn amazingly rapidly. Too stunned to even cry, too perplexed to even ask questions or take notes, too stunned even to think.

And while many people find genocide to be even more horrifying than self-immolation—self-immolation is nothing “compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine,” where people are all too aware of how quickly human beings burn—self-immolation is undoubtedly a highly intense and passionate form of suicide.

Regarding Bushnell, it seems that the political media elite in the US is making every effort to decontextualize and discredit him after his death. The US “Defence Department policy states that service members on active duty should ‘not engage in partisan political activity,'” according to a Time Magazine article, as if openly aiding in a genocide weren’t politically “partisan.”

Furthermore, as the magazine notes, wearing the uniform during “unofficial public speeches, interviews,” and other activities is prohibited by US military regulations.

Perhaps a military court might hear arguments from Bushnell’s ashes.

The instructions at the bottom of the Time article are kindly worded, “If you or someone you know may be experiencing a mental-health crisis or contemplating suicide, call or text 988.” This suggests, of course, that Bushnell was not making a defiant and persuasive political point, but rather the victim of a “mental-health crisis” in response to a highly disturbing political reality.

Ultimately, it is reasonable to classify as psychologically deranged anyone who is not going through a significant “mental-health crisis” over the slaughter occurring in Gaza with full US support.

And of course, the United States of America also committed its own genocide against Native Americans—another horrific event that has not been classified as a serious mass mental illness or anything like.

According to the official story, you are the insane one if you believe that the US or its Israeli criminal ally is mad for committing genocide.

As someone who comes from a family of US Air Force veterans—both of my grandfathers took part in the devastation in Vietnam—I have firsthand experience with the psychological effects of serving as an executioner for an empire.

Aaron Bushnell’s life was lost because of his ideals; he was intended to be a cog in the murderous machine.

Indeed, Bushnell was “one of the most principled comrades I’ve ever known,” according to a former colleague of his who worked with him to help the homeless population in San Antonio, Texas.

Furthermore, even though it is our responsibility as journalists to expose injustices, Bushnell has shamed the mainstream media in the West.
