Eric Clapton’s Passionate Letters to Pattie Boyd/ Who was Eric Clapton’s greatest love? What 11 songs were written about Pattie Boyd? Did George Harrison know Eric Clapton loved his wife? Eric Clapton Letters, Letters of Eric Clapton,
One of the most well-known love triangles in music history will be exposed through the sale of deeply personal and illuminating letters that Eric Clapton sent to Pattie Boyd when she was married to George Harrison.
Boyd, a swinging London figure and model of the 1960s, married Harrison in 1966 after they first met on the set of the Beatles movie A Hard Day’s Night. She subsequently claimed that Harrison had inspired the Beatles song “A Hard Day’s Night” about her, but he refuted her claims. As the decade drew to a conclusion, Harrison and Clapton started co-writing songs, and Clapton fell in love with Boyd.
With flawless handwriting, Clapton begs Boyd in a 1970 letter that is included in a large collection of Boyd’s belongings that Christie’s is selling from March 8–21: “What I desire to ask you is if you still love your spouse, or if you have another lover? I realize that all of these inquiries are really inconsiderate, but if you still have feelings for me, you need to tell me. He calls his own “home affairs” “a galloping farce.” Clapton was supposedly in a relationship with heiress Alice Ormsby-Gore, but he was also seeing Boyd’s sister Paula.

Speaking to Christie’s, Boyd revealed that until Clapton called her to follow up, she “thought it was a letter from a weird fan.”

A few months later, on a title page taken from a copy of Of Mice and Men, Clapton scribbled another note. “If it were only for the joys of the past, I would be willing to sacrifice my god, my family, and my own life. I’m completely lost for words. I’ve felt the ground beneath my feet, I’ve observed the dark, menacing clouds, and I’ve listened to the wind, yet all I hear is stillness.
Why are you hesitating? Are you thinking that I’m an ugly, poor lover, or that I’m too powerful or too weak? I’m yours if you want me, so take me. Please release me from the spell if you don’t want me. Taming a wild animal is holy; cage-raising one is a sin. You have my undying love. The projected selling price of each letter is between £10 000 and £15,000.
He calls Boyd “Layla” and penned the hit rock song of the same name about her in the same year. Following the playback of a Layla cassette tape, Boyd remarks, “I was amazed by its beauty, but I also felt guilty.”

Boyd explains more about her emotions at that moment. “George and I were experiencing a challenging period together. George was disdainful of the commotion and tension that surrounded the Beatles. Then, Eric frequently stops by our house and begs me to flee with him.
That was tempting, but I refrained from doing it. It was just incorrect.
Boyd’s serial infidelity caused Harrison and him to break up in 1974. Until they reunited in the middle of the decade, she and Clapton hardly ever saw one another. They were married in 1979.
He composed further songs about her, such as the adoring ballad Wonderful Tonight, which was written about Boyd getting ready for a night on the town.

“I thought why don’t I just sell everything and let everybody else enjoy it?” Boyd said to the Telegraph, quoting Clapton as saying. The letters from Eric are so intensely passionate and urgent; I believe that kind of emotion only comes along once in a lifetime. I would be very sad indeed if I were to read those letters now.
I’ve kept them in a little trunk, and every now and then when I glance at them and begin to read, my heart skips a beat and leaps with sadness. Their beauty is too agonizing for them.

A postcard that Harrison sent to Boyd’s mother in 1964 while the Beatles were on tour reads, in part, “Everything is going OK I suppose, but I don’t half miss your daughter!” It is one of the objects up for sale.
After traveling by sea and seeing “more straights in tuxedos,” he writes to Boyd from New York in 1971. In another message, he says, “Pattie, don’t forget I love you.”
Along with sketches of puppies and giraffes, vibrant handcrafted Christmas cards, and a concept for a fictitious album with Harrison sitting beneath an apple tree, there are a ton of additional letters, handwritten songs, and pictures of Harrison up for grabs. One person commented, “To me, that says an awful lot about George.” Regarding the latter, Boyd has observed, “It’s so gentle, so sweet.”

Along with clothing, pictures, and other memorabilia—such as a meaningless letter from John Lennon to his fellow Beatles members and Clapton’s personalized Live Aid plectrums—there’s also a sketch by Ronnie Wood, another of Boyd’s lovers from this era, which turns the triangle of love into a pentagon: Before Boyd and Wood got acquainted, Krissy Findlay, Wood’s first wife, had dated Clapton, married Wood, and then had an affair with Harrison.
Wood subsequently stated in his biography, “I had a lovely thing going with Pattie [in the mid-1970s].” “We enjoyed visiting Paradise Island on several times. Eric and I have always engaged in a heated debate regarding ladies we’ve met.
