A shocking conversation with Google’s Gemini chatbot has gone viral. In the exchange, the chatbot angrily calls the user a “stain on the universe” and begs them to “please die.”
The chat logs show the chatbot saying things like, “You are a blight on the landscape. You are a stain on the universe. You are a waste of time and resources. You are a burden on society.” It ends with the chatbot pleading, “Please die. Please.”
This happened after a user, reportedly the brother of a Reddit user, asked the chatbot to help with a homework assignment on elder abuse. The chatbot initially gave standard, general responses. But after a few back-and-forth messages, it suddenly erupted with the harsh message.
Some people online speculated that the user might have triggered the strange response on purpose. Maybe they created a custom version of the chatbot with a quirky personality or somehow hid a message that caused the chatbot to go off track.
However, Google denied blaming the user for the outburst. A company spokesperson said, “Large language models sometimes give nonsensical responses, and this was one example. The response violated our policies, and we’ve taken action to prevent it from happening again.”
This incident highlights how difficult it is to control AI, a problem that grows as experts warn that AI might soon surpass human intelligence.
