Along with releasing their return song, “Showtime,” Catfish & The Bottlemen have revealed fresh headline concerts in the UK. “Showtime” is the first new song by Van McCann and company in five years; “The Balance,” their most recent full-length release, came out in 2019.

The frontman sings on the song, which was written and recorded by McCann and multi-Grammy winner producer Dave Sardy (Oasis, LCD Soundsystem, The Rolling Stones). The song is about their comeback to music.

In the chorus of the hit song, McCann sings, “Get on this/ Sometimes when the thing you love is right in front of your eyes / Don’t blink or you’ll miss/ Showtime/ Before you know it’s going gone and that’s life,” over a booming symphony of jangly guitars and percussion. See the song’s complete lyrics below.

The first single from Catfish & the Bottlemen’s upcoming fourth studio album, which will shortly be revealed, is called “Showtime.”

This past weekend (February 17), the band released a six-second teaser of the song on social media, hinting to their first new music in five years. Along with new merchandising, the band also offered a pre-order for “Showtime” on a white 7-inch vinyl pressing.

The recently revealed performances will take place a few days ahead of their headline dates in Reading and Leeds this year, where they will play on the Friday in Leeds and the Sunday in Reading.

After their headline performances at Reading & Leeds and two outdoor gigs at Singleton Park in Swansea and Neighbourhood Weekender in Warrington, the band has not performed live since 2021.

Rumors about the group dissolving had already started to circulate by then.

“One of our longshots paid off,” sings frontman Van McCann on opener ‘Longshot’ from 2019’s ‘The Balance’ – a heartening thought for most bands who dream of headlining the hallowed stage of Reading.”

NME gave their headline performance at the 2021 Reading Festival a three-star review. Later on, he yearns for the line from “The Ride”‘s “Soundcheck” from 2016: “Because you grew up in a small town / You’ll appreciate it more.”

It’s simple to understand how Catfish rose to become one of the biggest guitar bands in Britain as circle pits whirl and the sizable crowd becomes a little more savage.

They are a well-oiled machine of independent skill; they are slick as fuck. Their songs can be exhilarating at times, as they quickly cycle through a catalog of stadium rock hits that appeal to large crowds.

The live performances that Catfish and the Bottlemen are anticipated to announce will be their first since guitarist Johnny “Bondy” Bond left the band.

Bond said in 2022 that he had left the band the previous year, blaming the lineup changes and the band’s uncertain future on “behavior constantly re-occurring that I found to be intolerable.”

He said in his statement, “To put it simply, I feel that both the professional and personal relationships had become entirely dysfunctional.”

Bondy continued, explaining that he served as a session musician for the band for four summer performances last year since “nobody else was ready to do so.”

Since then (Neighbourhood Festival ’21), I have had no contact or relationship of any kind with the surviving band members,” he stated.

He continued, saying that while he “assumed” the group would have notified fans of both his and drummer Bob Hall’s departures, “as far as I’m aware this has not happened yet.”
