The Netflix newly released web series “Heeramandi” has been in the news recently due to controversy surrounding the casting of Sharmin Segal as the character Alamzeb. The casting director, however, has come forward to defend the choice, citing Segal’s talent and suitability for the role.

“Heeramandi,” directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is set in the red-light district of Lahore in the pre-Independence era. The show boasts a star-studded cast, including Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali himself. However, the casting of Sharmin Segal, a relatively unknown actress, as Alamzeb has raised eyebrows.

Critics have pointed out that Segal lacks the physical attributes traditionally associated with the character Alamzeb, who is described as a tall and imposing figure. Some have also questioned whether Segal’s acting chops are up to par for such a complex and nuanced character.

However, the casting director, Shruti Mahajan, has defended the choice, stating that Segal was selected after an extensive audition process. Mahajan stated that Segal’s performance during the audition was exceptional, and she was the best fit for the role. Mahajan also pointed out that the physical attributes of the character are not as important as the actor’s ability to portray the character’s emotions and personality.

Mahajan also emphasized that Bhansali is known for his attention to detail and his ability to extract the best performances from his actors. She expressed confidence in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ability to guide Segal in bringing the character of Alamzeb to life.

Segal, for her part, has expressed gratitude for the opportunity and has stated that she worked hard to do justice to the role. In an interview, she said that she worked on her physicality and had taken acting classes to prepare for the role.

The controversy surrounding Segal’s casting is not uncommon in the Indian film industry, where fair skin and conventional beauty standards are often prioritized over talent and suitability for the role. However, the “Heeramandi” casting director’s defense of the choice shows a shift towards a more inclusive and merit-based casting process.
