Mitch McConnell Prepares to Retire After 15 Years at the Helm
After the general election in November, Senator Mitch McConnell, the party’s longest-serving leader in the history of the upper house, will step down from his position.
The Republican from Kentucky, who has led the party since 2007, made his announcement on Wednesday from the Senate floor.
Speaking from the front row desk often reserved for the party floor leader, Mr. McConnell informed his colleagues that he had been experiencing “a certain introspection” as a result of the death of his sister-in-law in recent weeks.
The senator from Bluegrass State said that the “end of [his] contributions” was “closer than I prefer” at 82 years old. The senator has experienced many public instances in recent months in which he seemed to stop for several seconds, raising questions about his health.

Leading the Senate Republican Conference, he said, had been “the honor of my life” and “the highest privilege,” but he also mentioned that “knowing when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter” is “one of life’s most underappreciated talents.”
He declared, “I stand before you today to declare that this will be my final term as the Senate’s Republican leader.”
Mr. McConnell continued, saying he was “actually looking forward to that” and said he would serve out his tenure as the senior senator for Kentucky, “albeit from a different seat.”
“The Senate is wonderful. It has always been my life. I doubt that in all of our history, this body has produced more outstanding senators than I do, but then again, who could have had greater respect for the Senate?
